Copy of Spotlight Series: Juanita Bocanegra

What are your clearest memories of your kindergarten teacher and classmates? Experiences early in life critically impact brain development for learning, relationships, behavior and health. Kindergarten is a milestone that has inspired us to ask parents, teachers, champions and donors to reflect on their own memories of kindergarten. Made possible by the Howard Miller Clock Company, the Gift of Time Spotlight Series helps tell a story about what’s possible in a community that elevates early learning and advances potential.

Q: Where did you attend kindergarten? Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? Was there another teacher that was a difference maker for you?

I attended kindergarten at a very small school in Hargill, Texas. The name of my teacher was Mrs. Escobar.

Q: Did you like school? Did school work come easy to you or did you struggle?

I've always enjoyed learning, so I liked school and school work came easy to me.

Q: How do you think your own kindergarten experience shaped you in terms of how you think, how it prepared you for further education, what it taught you about life, etc.?

I did not know how to speak English when I started kindergarten. Therefore, it definitely shaped me and prepared me for further education because that is when I started to learn a second language.
